Bay Phil’s Newsletter to the Community: May 2025
We want to hear from you!
The Bay Phil exists to serve you and meet the needs of our local communities, and that means tuning in to your interests and listening to your requests. We’re planning our programming for the FY25/26 season and want to make sure it meets your needs and that we’re not making assumptions that don’t match what you’d most like to hear and see.
Take a few minutes now and share your thoughts with us in this 10-question survey.
Make your voice heard! We’ll collect and summarize all responses in the next two weeks, by May 23.
Write your message to Jung-Ho
We’ll deliver it!
It’s sinking in for all of us that Jung-Ho is conducting his last performance with Bay Phil at our season finale, The Beatles Reimagined, on June 22.
You may be hoping to catch him at the show and talk face to face – but from what we’ve heard so far, there are many of us wanting to share, only one Jung-Ho, and only so much available time that Sunday. So, we’ve created another way to express your thoughts, and be sure he knows.
Click this link, jot down comments in your own words, and add your name at the end. Together, we’ll create a one-of-a-kind tribute blog to honor our illustrious leader - and create a long-lasting, forever-in-print record of our collective voices for all he’s done!
Drumroll for our season finale
The Beatles Reimagined
Speaking of Jung-Ho and our season finale . . . Do you have your tickets to ride yet? This is one you don’t want to miss. Come celebrate, and twist and shout to familiar tunes during The Beatles Reimagined Show on June 22 @ 3pm.
Ta-Da! Young Recitalist Concert
On Sunday afternoon, May 4, the Young Recitalist Concert at Fremont’s First United Methodist Church showcased the incredible musical talent we have in the local area! Produced by the Bay Phil Guild, in partnership with Bay Phil, the event featured the top 9 finalists (unfortunately, one finalist was ill) and a trio - young musical “proteges” from the third grade (yes!) to high school students. Their performances blew the audience away.
Each of the finalists played a memorized piece, without any music in front of them. The poise and expression shown as violinists, pianists, a cellist, a flautist, and a clarinetist performed was something to behold. Attendees couldn’t help but beam, seeing and hearing this top-tier talent from our future generation of musicians.
There were four Young Recitalist Competition Award Winners:
First Place: Jayden Choi
Second Place: Lynn Ueno
Third Place: Claire Yang
Alvin Dockter Award: Philia Wu
Honoring his memory
Sadly, we lost Steve Cho earlier this year. Steve was the first Chinese American elected to serve as a council member in the City of Fremont, and he devoted his life to community service. Steve was very supportive of the Bay Phil and Bay Phil Youth Orchestra, and secured the first grant from Alameda County to start BPYO. He was a member of our Board of Directors and also an instrumental leader in negotiations with the musicians' union for Bay Phil.
